Those who accompanied the Messenger during his lifetime made every effort to acquire religious knowledge, study his teachings, and implement it in their lives. After a while, the time came for them to pass on these teachings to their students – who travelled from all over Arabia and surrounding regions such that knowledge of the sunnah spread like wildfire.
It became necessary for those who intended to follow the teachings of the prophet to distinguish reports (known as hadith) based on their accuracy and authenticity. God inspired the Muslim community to dedicate themselves to this task tirelessly, and there arose a science of hadith classification that has not been seen in any community before or since this early community of Muslims.
Bustan al-Muhaddithin is unique three-part series introducing the entire Hadith canon and the methodology of hadith scholars (muhaddithin). The course will be based on the famous work of Muhaddith Shah ‘Abd al-‘Aziz al-Dihlawi, entitled ‘Bustan al-Muhaddithin’ (Garden of Hadith Scholars), written in Persian in the early 19th Century.
The text has been extremely popular among scholars of hadith in the Indian-Subcontinent. It surpasses other books written on the same subject in Arabic, Persian, and other languages.
The course is delivered by Shaykh Mohammad Akram Nadwi, who has translated the work from Persian into Arabic, drawing upon several editions of the text including extensive annotations.
Studying this course will provide students with a detailed understanding of the principles of hadith compilation, introduce the science of hadith and isnad criticism, and provide an overview of the style and methodologies of the authors of these texts.
